CANCER - GENERAL

Cancer is a class of diseases or disorders characterized by uncontrolled division of cells and the ability of these cells to invade other tissues, either by direct growth into adjacent tissue through invasion or by implantation into distant sites by metastasis. This unregulated growth is caused by damage to DNA, resulting in mutations to genes that encode for proteins controlling cell division. Many mutation events may be required to transform a normal cell into a malignant cell. These mutations can be caused by chemicals or physical agents called carcinogens, by close exposure to radioactive materials, or by certain viruses that can insert their DNA into the human genome. Mutations occur spontaneously, or are passed down generations as a result of germ line mutations.

CLOTHING / GARMENT / APPAREL

Clothing is defined, in its broadest sense, as coverings for the torso and limbs as well as coverings for the hands (gloves), feet (socks, shoes, sandals, boots) and head (hats, caps). Humans nearly universally wear clothing, which is also known as dress, garments, attire, or apparel. People wear clothing for functional as well as for social reasons. Clothing protects the vulnerable nude human body from the extremes of weather and other features of our environment. But every article of clothing also carries a cultural and social meaning.

DEATH INVESTIGATION

Forensic Pathologists can perform a full forensic autopsy which can very often provide answers to families and next of kin when deaths occur that cannot be explained or when there are suspicious circumstances involved. It is often the first step in determining whether there are any issues of Medical Malpractice that can lead to legal litigation.

DUMBWAITER

A small elevator used to transport food or other items between floors of a building. An elevator is a transport device used to move goods or people vertically. Outside North America, elevators are known more commonly as lifts, although the word elevator is familiar from American movies and television shows, just as some Americans are aware of lift from imported entertainment. Other languages may have loanwords based on either elevator (e.g. Japanese) or lift (e.g. Cantonese). Because of wheelchair access laws, elevators are often a requirement in new buildings with multiple floors.

ENERGY

Energy is the ability to do work. It may express itself in different forms; kinetic and potential energy and the ability to do mechanical work; thermal, chemical and electromagnetic energy; nuclear energy, and various other forms. Power is the time rated expenditure of energy.

EXPERT WITNESS SALES

An expert witness is a witness, who by virtue of education, or profession, or experience, is believed to have special knowledge of his subject beyond that of the average person, sufficient that others may officially (and legally) rely upon his opinion.

FIREARMS / BALLISTICS

Experts in the study of the characteristics, firing, flight and effect of ammunition. Identification of weapons through the retrieval and examination of bullets and trace evidence.

FORENSIC PATHOLOGY

Forensic Pathology is the branch of medical science that uses medical knowledge for legal purposes. The forensic pathologist performs autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death in situations falling under the jurisdiction of the local medical examiner or coroner. It can also include the examination of tissues, wounds and injuries due to crime or negligence.

INJURY INTERPRETATION

LEAD

Lead is a chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol Pb (L. plumbum) and atomic number 82. A soft, heavy, toxic and malleable poor metal, lead is bluish white when freshly cut but tarnishes to dull gray when exposed to air. Lead is used in building construction, lead-acid batteries, bullets and shot, and is part of solder, pewter, and fusible alloys. Lead has the highest atomic number of all stable elements. (But see the article on Bismuth, which has a half life so long it can be considered stable.)

MOLD

Molds are ubiquitous in nature, and mold spores are a common component of household dust. The term toxic mold is sometimes used to refer to mold-related indoor air quality problems.

MOTORCYCLE HELMETS

A motorcycle helmet is a type of protective headgear used by motorcycle riders. The primary goal of a motorcycle helmet is to protect the rider's head during impact, although many helmets provide additional conveniences, such as face shields, ear protection, intercom etc.

PAINTBALL GUNS

A paintball marker or paintball gun is the primary device used in the game of paintball to mark an opposing player. It uses a rapidly expanding gas (usually CO2 or compressed air) to force a paintball through a barrel with a muzzle velocity of approximately 300 ft/s (91 m/s).

PLASTICS

Plastic covers a range of synthetic or semisynthetic polymerization products. They are composed of organic condensation or addition polymers and may contain other substances to improve performance or economics. There are few natural polymers generally considered to be "plastics". Plastics can be formed into objects or films or fibers. Their name is derived from the fact that many are malleable, having the property of plasticity. Plastics are designed with immense variation in properties such as heat tolerance, hardness, resiliency and many others. Combined with this adaptability, the general uniformity of composition and light weight of plastics ensures their use in almost all industrial segments.

UNEXPLAINED HOSPITAL DEATHS

Forensic Pathologists can perform a full forensic autopsy which can very often provide answers to families and next of kin when deaths occur in a hospital setting. It is often the first step in determining whether there are any issues of Medical Malpractice that can lead to legal litigation.

USE OF FORCE

The use of force to settle conflicts is much debated in theory and in practice (see moral philosophy, ethics). When a conflict is viewed as being between parties having the same standing, observers often recommend the use of negotiation or other "conflict resolution" techniques. When a conflict is viewed as being between a law-breaker and a law-enforcer, observers tend to side with the enforcer (but with important exceptions). Analysis of conflicts, and of when and where it is legitimate for an involved (or intervening) party to use force to settle it, quickly becomes complicated.
