EW #1073 M.D. currently combines the private practice of adult psychiatry with medicolegal consultation throughout the United States. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Until 2002, he was Vice Chair for Clinical Services and Director of the Division of Adult Psychiatry within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham (UAB). He was also Medical Director of the UAB Center for Psychiatric Medicine and a full Professor.
He is the co-author of the book Patient or Pretender: Inside the Strange World of Factitious Disorders which was translated into Japanese and Dutch. He has discussed factitious disorders, Munchausen syndrome, malingering and many other topics in psychiatry in appearances on CNN's "Your Health," "Larry King Live," "Good Morning America," "20/20," and other television and radio programs in the U.S., Canada, England, Australia, Japan, and Austria. His work has been the subject of articles in the New York Times, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, and JAMA, and in magazines such as GQ, Shape, and Psychology Today. His second book, The Spectrum of Factitious Disorders, was published by the American Psychiatric Press in 1996. His third book, Stranger Than Fiction: When Our Minds Betray Us, was published by the American Psychiatric Press in 1998. Stranger Than Fiction is a review of both common and controversial topics in psychiatry that is intended for the general public.
EW #1073 is the author of more than 80 publications as well as numerous national and regional presentations in the field of psychiatry. He has functioned extensively as a medical expert for the plaintiff or defense in dozens of legal cases. In 1993, he was the recipient of an Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. In 1994, he was elected a member of the American College of Psychiatrists.
He is included in the 1996 edition of The Best Doctors in America: Southeast Region, having been selected by other psychiatrists, and in 1997 was selected by the Birmingham Business Journal to its list of the "Top 40 Under 40." Starting in 1998, he has been chosen for each national edition of The Best Doctors in America. In 1999, he was awarded the Howard L. Holley Award of the Medical Association of the State of Alabama for his contributions toward enhancing the public's appreciation and understanding of medicine. He was also chosen for Who's Who in the World. He is a manuscript reviewer for professional journals such as Psychiatric Services, Psychosomatics, International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine, and General Hospital Psychiatry. He was selected to write the entry on Munchausen syndrome for the Microsoft CD-ROM and has co-authored the chapters on factitious disorders and/or the form of child abuse called "Munchausen by proxy" for the Kaplan Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, the 2002 edition of The American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Psychiatry, and the definitive child abuse reference, Child Maltreatment.
In 1999, he was selected to revise and update the text in the Factitious Disorders chapter and the Factitious Disorder by Proxy section of DSM-IV and the entry on Psychiatry in Encyclopedia Americana. In that year, he also won a Medical Informatics Fellowship from the National Library of Medicine and was named a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. In 2001, he became national Secretary of the American Association of Psychiatric Administrators. He serves as Production Advisor to the Discovery Health Channel.
